Who I Follow

Lord Aldo of Craiova and Kanaya, as a birthday card for meddlingGeminiform.

I guess this might take some explaining. Aldo is a character from MG’s writing. He’s a member of the vampire nobility, and is from roughly the Regency era in that universe. His blood is red but his color of choice is green.

So naturally I thought he should meet Kanaya.

It’s a bit of a tradition at this point for me to draw Aldo into birthday cards for MG, though I don’t always. Last year, I drew a miniature MSPA parody comic as a card. So this is technically the second Homestuck-related birthday card I’ve drawn.

The year before that was a 11th Doctor Birthday Cake card. And the year before that I crossed Aldo with my own webcomic, Brain Comics. So I’ve been busy.

Image descriptions for this and the other linked cards beneath the cut.

2012 card: Aldo has been dressed up to look like Kanaya. His skin is greyer than usual and is glowing. He is wearing her red skirt/black shirt outfit, and has fake Kanaya horns on. His hair is still auburn, however. There is also a hint of green makeup, and his lips have black lipstick on them.

Across from him, Kanaya is holding up her hands in amazement. She is wearing Aldo’s green regency gentlemen’s outfit, complete with cravat and shiny boots. No effort has been made to hide her horns or grey skin, though she is glowing slightly less than usual.

The two are set against the traditional Homestuck “conflict” screen, with Aldo over a green background and Kanaya over a red, with the two colors scratched across each other in the middle of the image.

ALDO (in red text): This is blatant stereotyping and I refuse to be made a part of it.

KANAYA (in her usual green text): Ordinarily I Would Agree

KANAYA: But

KANAYA: So Fashionable

KANAYA: Also

KANAYA: Happy Wriggling Day

2011 comic: A parody of mspaintadventures.com. Page 1 has a drawing of stripey Squiddles!(tm) socks, and the text: “So I was going to draw you a BIRTHDAY CARD. But then I got DISCOURAGED. Because how could it possibly be as AWESOME as your NEW SOCKS?

A photoshopped version of the SBaHJ “i have the car” comic. A birthday card has been photoshopped into various panels.

The sock ruse was a….DISTACTION

i HAVE the card

(card gets driven into the lake)

We see a closeup frame of the kids’ session prototyping ring nestled between two fingers.

We zoom out to see a 3/4 prototyped Aldo, looking more or less like pre-Bec Jack. His symbol is a HEART, not a SPADE, however. He says (in reference to the 2009 comic) “I’m starting to think we should have stayed in cardiff”, his hand resting on the sword in his chest.

2010 card: The 11th Doctor, stuck chest-deep in a multilayer birthday cake. The entire piece is done in sepia-tones. He says, “Happy…Birthday? Sorry, I think I’ve got the wrong cake. I’m actually trying to get to a stag party.” “Also, I appear to be stuck.”

2009 card: This one is going to have a lot of weird references in it. Sorry. Aldo and Gerard are in Brainley’s lab. Previous to this, they were in a Torchwood crossover fanfic. Gerard’s two primary languages are German and French, but he’s not so great at English yet.

Brainley: It worked! My alternate reality vortex generator works! Now I can fulfill my lifelong dream of meeting the Professor from Gilligan’s Island.

Aldo: First Cardiff, now this. Just for once I’d like to wind up in the dimension of type o-negative nymphomaniacs.

McMoosington (holding a remote): Hey, if that guy’s a vampire, why doesn’t this animatronic remote work on him? I wanted to make him do a birthday dance.

Gerard (who is wearing a cravat-like article): Er, um… (in french) j’aime votre cravat. (I like your tie.)

Dobbsey (who always wears a bowtie): Merci! J’aime votre bowtie. (Thank you! I like your bowtie.)
